How a hookah works

  1. Sits on top of the bowl and holds the coals. Open or close its vents to raise or lower the heat; an easier, steadier alternative to foil.

  2. Holds the shisha under the coals. Clay keeps the heat even; phunnel and silicone bowls keep the juices in the bowl instead of the stem.

  4. The body of the hookah: the smoke runs down through it into the water. Most stems also have a purge valve to blow out stale smoke.

  6. Connects to the port on the stem and carries the smoke to you. A washable silicone hose keeps old flavors from lingering.
